Russian-German (late) repatriates are one of the largest migrant groups in Germany. Nevertheless, the multifaceted history of Russian Germans remains largely invisible—even within the community itself. Many chapters of this history have long been neglected, and critical questions have often gone unasked. With Putin’s current regime and the war of aggression against Ukraine, Russian-German communities are now more divided than ever. It is precisely in times like these that education, exchange, and cohesion are needed. Project Ekho therefore aims to make the Russian-German past visible and come to terms with it – through exchange, education, and artistic engagement.
Ari and Elena are of Russian-German descent. In their artistic and academic work, they deal intensively with the history and migration of their families. Together with friends who provide support in the background, they have launched Project Ekho. Their shared goal is to build a Russian-German community.
The project began in August 2025. The aim is to explore the individual family histories of all participants, including through joint artistic workshops. At the end of the year, the results will be published in an art exhibition and a print magazine.
